My couple chose to have their proposal and engagement session at Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle on Capitol Hill. It’s such a beautiful location, with not only the greenhouse being an amazing feature but the whole park being stunning for weddings as well as proposals or engagement shoots. However, there are some tricky things to navigate with the location which is why I’ve created this guide to help you through the planning process.
Why Volunteer Park Conservatory Is Such a Beautiful Engagement Location
If you’ve never been inside the Volunteer Park Conservatory, it is one of those Seattle spaces that feels a little hidden in plain sight. The historic greenhouse dates back to 1912 and is divided into five distinct rooms featuring different plant collections, including palms, ferns, cacti, bromeliads, and seasonal displays. The combination of glass, historic architecture, and layers of greenery gives you a completely different look from the typical outdoor Seattle engagement session.
It also solves one of the biggest weather problems with planning engagement photos in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle rain doesn’t have to mean rescheduling or pulling out umbrellas. Inside the Conservatory, you get beautiful filtered light and greenery surrounding you regardless of what is happening outside. And honestly, there is something especially romantic about being surrounded by plants and warm greenhouse light while the city is just outside.
A Private Greenhouse All to Yourselves
One of the biggest reasons we love this session is that the couple had the Conservatory completely closed to the public during their shoot. That privacy makes a huge difference.
Instead of worrying about people walking through the background or feeling self-conscious about kissing and cuddling in a public space, the couple could simply relax into the experience. My associate, Dani, could move around them freely, looking for different compositions and letting the session unfold naturally.
This is one of those situations where paying for the permit and private access isn’t just about getting pretty photographs. It’s about creating an entirely different experience. Professional photography at the Conservatory does require advance permitting, and Seattle Parks specifically directs professional photographers to reserve the space through its ceremony application.
For this particular session, the couple also kept things beautifully simple. No elaborate setup or added decor was needed. The Conservatory itself was the backdrop. And it was more than enough.
Let the Greenhouse Be the Decor
One thing worth knowing if you’re dreaming about a Volunteer Park Conservatory engagement session is that you don’t need to bring much with you. In fact, the space has restrictions around additional setup. Seattle Parks’ current guidelines note that no additional setup is allowed inside the Conservatory, and existing benches and items cannot be moved.
Rather than thinking of that as a limitation, we love the idea of embracing it. Wear something you feel incredible in. Bring the person love. Maybe bring a meaningful piece of jewelry, a bouquet if permitted for your particular reservation, or another small personal detail. Then let the architecture and plants do the rest.
An Engagement Session That Feels Like You
There is a tendency to think engagement photos need to happen somewhere dramatic: on top of a mountain, at a beach at sunset, or underneath the Seattle skyline.
