Mini sessions are a great way to get those yearly photographs to print and put on the wall or send in a holiday card. I’ve built up mini sessions at other points in the year, but this was my first year doing Mother’s Day mini sessions and it was such a blast. Especially since I’m expecting myself, it added such a tough of sweetness and sentimentally to the overall experience. If you’ve considered mini sessions but never done them yourself, I’ll walk you through a little bit on how it can look!

Finding the Right Location for a Mini Session
Like all sessions, location can make or break a shoot. Since we were doing our mini sessions around Mother’s Day and the weather can be unpredictable, I decided to hold the mini sessions in a studio. There are several seasons why indoor mini sessions have their perks. The first is that light is incredibly predictable in that space which can make it easier to set up and move through poses since we’re working in a crunched timeline. It allows less distractions if you’ve got kiddos in the mix as well! Lastly, indoor mini sessions allow us to build out beautiful floral installations which aren’t as practical in an outdoor space. Our blooms from Capital Blooms really complemented these Mother’s Day mini sessions!

Why Invest in a Mother’s Day Mini Session?
Maybe this is self explanatory, but Mom is always the one booking the tickets, getting the photographer, doing the work. What an amazing gift to get her a photo session with her kids and partner for Mother’s Day. It allows her to get some much-deserved focus on her. Kids laughing and running around her, and with a photo session focused on her and her relationship to everyone it allows us to lean into those small moments. When a kid snuggles up to mom, small hands holding hers, and so many more beautiful moments that maybe don’t get caught at a regular family session. It’s a perfect time to showcase all of the kids personalities and how they interact with Mom.

My Approach to Mini Sessions
My ultimate goal with all mini sessions is to keep things light hearted and playful. Real magic happens when people are laughing, being their wild interesting selves. That’s what my goal is to foster in people! And do it in a shorter amount of time. Because mini sessions happen in a shorter time period, I just want everyone to feel immediately comfortable and know I’ve got their back from behind the camera.
If you missed out on Mother’s Day mini session this year, don’t worry, they’ll be back next year! I’m excited to continue growing this session and expanding it to serve even more mom’s. And next year, I’ll be in front of the camera too with my mini! Reach out if you have questions about Mother’s Day mini sessions.
