Some wedding venues make you work to find the beauty. At Rock Creek Gardens, you don’t have to look far.
I recently teamed up with the Rock Creek Gardens team to photograph the venue itself, creating a fresh collection of images they could use to showcase the gardens on their website. We met near sunset, and I spent the evening following the light, exploring the grounds, and looking for the little details that make this place so special.
Every time I’ve worked at Rock Creek Gardens, the experience has been lovely, so getting to photograph the grounds without anyone there, it was fun!
The Art of Location Scouting at Rock Creek Gardens
One thing people might not realize about wedding photography is that location scouting never really turns off. Even when I’m walking through a space without a camera, part of my brain is always envisioning what could happen there.
I notice where the light falls through the trees, how a pathway might frame a couple walking toward their ceremony, or where I would position myself to anticipate a meaningful moment. I’m always looking for natural framing, interesting layers, and the little pockets of beauty that can make an image feel like a memory rather than just a photograph.
At a wedding, these instincts help me anticipate moments before they happen. I’m already thinking about where the light will be during the ceremony, how the surroundings might complement a portrait, and where I can stand to capture a moment without interrupting it.
Finding Beauty in the Gardens
Photographing Rock Creek Gardens without a wedding happening gave me the freedom to slow down and really pay attention to the space itself.
As the sun moved lower, I followed the changing light through the gardens, looking for the way it highlighted the greenery, filtered through the trees, and transformed familiar corners of the property. Without a timeline to follow, I could spend time noticing details that might otherwise pass in the middle of a busy wedding day.
I love finding beauty in what’s already in front of me. I don’t need a location to be elaborate or perfectly styled to see its potential. But at Rock Creek Gardens, the natural beauty is everywhere. The gardens provide so much texture, color, and natural framing that the setting does a lot of the work for you.
