One of the greatest honors as a photographer is being trusted to document a family’s journey over the years. From weddings to annual family sessions, Tia and Wil have invited me to capture their milestones and everyday moments. When they found out they were leaving for another state, they wanted to get one last photo session in! I loved that! So, we decided on Whidbey Island for the perfect family photo session.
Farewell Session on Whidbey Island
Tia and Wil have been part of my photography journey for years, signing up for my fall mini-sessions annually. This time, we went all-in with a full-hour session. It was a perfect way to document their growing family—complete with their sweet daughter and beloved dogs—before they embarked on their next adventure out of state. The choice of Whidbey Island added an extra layer of sentimentality, as it’s one of my favorite locations to shoot. Mostly because it has everything, stunning views of the water, fields to play in, and amazing light. If you can’t tell from this engagement session, I love this spot!
Capturing Golden Hour Magic
Golden hour on Whidbey Island is a photographer’s dream. This session was no exception. Tia and Wil’s family stood against the backdrop of the ocean and rugged coastline. Their interactions with their daughter and dogs made it even better. I feel like the perfect golden hour light adds such a soft, beautiful light to people’s faces and gives truly epic images.
A First Ferry Ride at Dusk
After the family photo session on Whidbey Island, we all rode the ferry back together. It was cool because it was their daughter’s first time riding a ferry. So getting to document them all together on the ferry in the fading light was beautiful for many reasons. Doing photos on the Washington State ferries is a cool way to show off Seattle culture in a unique way since we have the biggest ferry system in the United States. I love getting to capture people in that element.
