  2. VA Tip of the Week: 7 Ways to Maximize Your Pinterest Profile

    March 2, 2012 by tminspired

Last week, I shared “The Basics” of Pinterest through 20 different tips. This week, I am sharing a short post including 7 ways to MAXIMIZE your profile. After all, you always want to make a good first impression!

7 Ways to Maximize Your Pinterest Profile:

    1. Feature your business name for more exposure! Set your business name as your username, or your profile nameafter you sign up for your account.
      • This isn’t necessary or required, but it will help you business wise! (For me, I have it set to my real name to keep it personalized.) Either way is okay!
    2. Add in your Bio/About Me! If you view your profile, you will see the section to “edit” it. The bio is found under your profile photo. Keep it short and sweet – they don’t allow a ton of space! Always make sure that your text doesn’t cut off.
    3. Connect to Twitter and Facebook, and add your website URL. If you connect your accounts, a link to each network will show underneath the bio on your profile page.
    4. Be creative about your boards names. Whenever someone “repins” a pin of yours, the board in which it came from will be shown as well. Make sure to make each board sound inviting!
    5. Don’t forget to add a “Follow me on Pinterest” button/link to your website and blog to gain maximum exposure to your Pinterest account. Promote happily that you are a pinner!
    6. Add a Pinterest tab to your Facebook Page: Here is a great post showing you how!
    7. Add a Pinterest button to your blog posts. This allows anyone to “repin” your photos, directing the link of the image straight back to you!

How do you maximize your Pinterest Profile? Is there something you still don’t understand about Pinterest? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

  3. VA Tip of the Week: Engage!

    February 18, 2012 by tminspired

The biggest part of marketing yourself in Social Media is to engage with those you are in contact with. If they don’t feel they have a personal relationship with you, they won’t be reading your posts or buy the products and opportunities you’re trying to sell. Here are some tips to help you engage your audience!

Don’t overwhelm yourself! There are so many networks out there, you can never seem to sustain a “name” out there with just one. But that doesn’t mean you need to sign up for all of them! Pick the ones you can handle, and stay active on those. It’s better to be more active on less networks than have hundreds of networks that you don’t have time to check. (I would say Facebook, Linked In, and Twitter. Plus a blog if you’re up for it!)

Message templates: New contacts. A lot of VA’s and even people running their own networks, will use template messages for new contacts. They can be similar, but most of them aren’t identical. (By the way, Facebook will ding your account if you send out the same message or link multiple times – if you get too many warnings they will temporarily disable the messaging feature on your account, so be careful!)
These templates will be for connection opportunities such as: When you request to add someone as a friend, when someone accepts your friend request, a Twitter autoresponder (or personal DM message) to new followers, ect.

Message templates: Conversation starters. You can choose people at random or sort through them by their job title or location to be relevant to the content you are sending out. Direct connections come more easily when you’re sharing what you two have in common.
This is great, too, for when you are launching a book and you want to connect with those who may want to read it, or help you market it through their networks. (Radio hosts, marketers, others in your industry, prospects, ect.)

Personalizing mass invites for events. When sending an event to your contacts, I always like to add a “note” to the event invite. This makes it seem personal and sometimes has the person look twice before they don’t read or simply decline the event.
If using Linked In, you can sort through people on your messages by their job title or location. This is helpful while you may be contacting business owners vs. college students, as well as the contacts in your area vs. across the country. Whenever possible, make your message relevant to those you are inviting.

Creatively engage with your following. I loved this article: 5 Awesome Examples of Engaging Social Media Campaigns on Hubspot Blog. Especially the added tip that reads: In the end, it’s not always about what you do, it’s how you do it. If your fans and followers are engaging with your campaign, that’s great, but make sure you give them a reason to be there that will help move the needle for your company as well. Set goals (do you want to increase reach, generate leads, etc.?), use calls-to-action, and make sure your campaign is engineered to achieve those goals. Use your social media campaigns as a tool to build interest in your business and ultimately generate new leads and future customers.
Do something you don’t see that often. The more creative and interactive, the faster your campaign will take off as well as your Social Media networks!

Here are some 12 other great ways to interact and start conversations in Social Media:

    1. Always respond to the comments you receive across all networks, as well as direct messages and mentions on Twitter (the good AND the bad – this is a great way to show your networks that you are listening!)
    2. Ask questions through statuses, blogs, and tweets
    3. Answer questions you see in other statuses, blogs, and tweets
    4. Ask for public feedback/reviews on products from your customers
    5. Post about those who influence you on your networks (when you do, tag them so they will be notified!)
    6. Thank those who post about you – across all networks (you’re notified when they tag you)
    7. Create a Pinterest board dedicated to the content you are influenced by (New post coming up about Pinterest and how to use it! Stay tuned for that.)
    8. Create lists on Twitter to easily organize your followers and those you follow. Do this especially for those who inspire you!
    9. If you’re on Google+, do the same with your circles
    10. Start getting into video marketing (talk to your followers about what is coming up, a funny joke you thought of, a book you’re writing, a blog post you’re writing, a new theme of posts that are coming up, a class you’re teaching, tutorials, or be ambitious and start a tip of the week of your own via Youtube!) Show your personality and don’t be afraid of the camera!
    11. Share articles you find that will benefit the time of your readers
    12. Personalize everything. All the time. If you sound like a robot, you will be ignored. Put in as much effort as you can – it shows and definitely pays off!

    This weeks takeaway tip:
It’s important to remember that the point in engaging is so that each person doesn’t feel like a “number.” Show them all that you appreciate their feedback and support by spending just a few extra minutes everyday to engage with them. What harm could it do, really?

  4. VA Tip of the Week: Over Posting

    February 10, 2012 by tminspired

One Social Media “DON’T” is: over posting!

It’s great if you have your content hooked up through a third party website, such as Hootsuite.com (my personal favorite) But that doesn’t mean ALL of your content, scheduled ahead or not, should be posted on ALL of your Social Media networks!

    Just a few reasons why…..

    • Don’t overwhelm your readers! Don’t post your every thought – it’s okay to spread them out over time, even if they seem important to share right now!
    • Think twice before posting your every thought. :)
    • You don’t want people to “hide” your posts on their news feed or unfollow you on Twitter. (You can think of it as losing a potential customer.)
    • Before you post anything, think about your boss or parents reading it. Still want to post it?

Here are some posting guidelines for different networks:

Twitter:  The timeline runs fast and usually people follow hundreds of Tweeters. So tweeting a lot is “okay” in a sense because most of your tweets will be lost in the feed, anyway.
    * Even if it is for marketing purposes, this doesn’t mean you can or should post more than 5 times in one hour. That just gets annoying. (Especially to those only following about 20 people!)

Linked In:  I usually have all of my tweets go directly to Linked In, although if you would like to specify “work” and “play” with your two networks, you should only have specific posts go to Linked In.

Facebook:  This is the fun and interactive network. Yes, lots of people use it for business, but Facebook is moving the “business” aspect over to Fan Pages, instead. So, the Profile is mainly a place for “friends.” You can treat it the same as you would your friend.
Did something funny happen to you today? Post about it. You can receive likes and start a conversation. As long as it’s appropriate and you wouldn’t mind your boss reading it, have fun.
It doesn’t have to be all business, just remember that all of your friends and subscribers may be working with you some day!

Facebook Fan Page and Google+:  These ones ARE all business. Only post relevant information to your readers. They don’t want to know what you ate for breakfast (Twitter) or a walk through of your entire day (Facebook Profile).

Twitter and Facebook posts should always be separate:  Whether you post them at a different time or in a different way, don’t make them exactly the same. If you have to cut down to the 140 character limit on Twitter, you don’t want your Facebook readers “readng smthing like thisThey probs would think its annyng&probs unfollow u 2” But on Twitter, it’s somehow still okay!
Don’t allow #Hashtags to show up on your Facebook profile. It doesn’t matter if it’s a #quote or a #tip relevant to #socialmedia and #business… Leave it out of the Facebook conversation.
Facebook will let you put basically as much as you want in one post. If you try to post something over 140 characters on both Facebook and Twitter, the tweet will be cut short.

I must also mention Pinterest:  Can you imagine if every single thing you pinned actually went to your Facebook news feed or Twitter account? Or if everyone you’re following/friends with did the same? No one needs to see all of that. If they did, they can just follow you on Pinterest.

Here is an image I found via Google to help you when you’re not sure what network you should use when posting:

This weeks takeaway:  Think of Social Media as a conversation. Give yourself the chance to listen and respond before you jump to the next thing. Engage with those connected with you. Talk with others instead of to them! RT others on Twitter and comment on other posts in other networks to gain interaction and a following. It’s not all about you!

How do you feel about over posters? Maybe you are one? How much is TOO much?
