Mariah, Mason and their dog Trigger, allowed me to document a snapshot of their life in California. After they got married, they moved to California while Mason was in the Marine Corps. This apartment was their first home together. They refer to it as their dinky 790 sq. ft. apartment where they shared their first home cooked meal. This is the place where Mariah watched Mason leave for a 7 month military deployment. When I asked them one word that they would use to describe their relationship, they responded with the word “strong,” and I couldn’t agree more.
When Mason returned home from his deployment, they started a routine that was completely their own. This was finally their life together. Just a few months ago, they moved back to Washington. Before they left, we had an in home lifestyle session to celebrate. We celebrated their love for each other, their favorite moments together, and their home that they’ll remember forever.
Lifestyle sessions are about documenting real life and genuine moments. My new favorite sessions are when I can document a day in the life of a couple or family. I love walking into a home and finding the little details that make their home unique to them. I focus on finding the smallest moments that show how they love each other deeply. I generate tasks for them to do together instead of a list of stiff poses. The tasks are based on what they love to do together, such as: making coffee, cooking meals, dancing to their favorite songs, watching Netflix, and snuggling on the couch or in their bed.
In all honesty, a lifestyle session in your home is really a vulnerable thing for a couple to be willing to do, and it’s amazing what happens when your client embraces it with open arms.
When I debriefed with them after their session, Mariah said: “My hope for this session was to capture our routine and the little apartment we made home, before we moved back to Washington. I was hesitant at first, thinking of the dog hair from our German Shepherd around our apartment. We also felt nervous about having someone come into our routine since our mornings are intimate. This is the only time we consistently have together everyday. But as soon as Taylor left, I felt so silly for feeling nervous. She is so down to earth and we were comfortable carrying along with our routine. Thinking about our little life in California is dreamy, and I’m so happy that Taylor was able to help us step outside of our comfort zones. We are thrilled to have these timeless photographs that we can cherish forever and show our future kids one day.
When thinking of the session overall, we felt like it brought us closer together. I cried when Taylor sent me the link to our gallery. Mason and I have many photos taken by her, but these are my favorite because of how natural we are.
Taylor, your work is truly priceless. Mason and I couldn’t be happier.”
I believe that “home” isn’t just the roof over your head, but it’s really about being with the one you love, and knowing that home is wherever they are. I’m so thankful I was able to document their first home together and these moments they shared.
